Why you will love this recipe?
- Healthier alternative: Air frying requires significantly less oil compared to deep frying, making it a healthier cooking method.
- Crispy texture: This air fryer recipe gives you a crispy exterior while maintaining a tender interior.
- Quick cooking time: Air fryers cook food faster than conventional ovens. Sweet potato fries made in an air fryer will typically be ready in less time compared to baking them in an oven, saving you time in the kitchen.
Ingredients
Sweet potatoes: For this homemade fries recipe, I used two medium-sized sweet potatoes that weighed approximately 600 grams.
Spices: I use chili powder and chaat masala. Red chili powder can be substituted with cayenne pepper in this healthy air fryer recipe.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Wash and clean the sweet potato in cold water. Pat dry using a kitchen towel. Slice off both edges using a sharp knife. Cut each sweet potato in half (images 1 and 2).
Step 2: Place it vertically on the cutting board and cut it into four parts. Cut each part into four parts. This will give you ¼-inch thick strips (images 3 and 4).
Step 3: Repeat with the rest of the sweet potatoes and place them in a large bowl (images 5 and 6).
Step 4: Combine the cut sweet potato with olive oil, corn starch, chili powder, salt, and chaat masala in a large mixing bowl. Mix well (images 7, 8, and 9).
Step 5: Lightly brush the air-fryer basket with some oil. Place the fries in a single layer in the air fryer basket (image 10).
Step 6: Air fry for 10-12 minutes. Shake the basket at the 6-minute mark (images 11 and 12). Serve crispy fries with your favorite dipping sauce.
Alternate cooking methods
Baking: Preheat the oven to 425 F (220 C). Arrange the fries on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat. Bake for approximately 20-25 minutes, flipping them halfway through, until they are golden brown and crispy.
Deep frying: Heat oil in a deep pot or deep fryer. Carefully add the seasoned sweet potato fries to the hot oil and fry in batches until they turn golden brown and crispy. Remove them from the oil using a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
Variations
Chili lime - This tangy-spicy version is my favorite. Add ½ teaspoon of chili powder or cayenne pepper along with turmeric before air frying/baking. Once the chips are done, drizzle lime juice just before serving. You can also use lemon juice instead of lime juice.
Pepper - Toss some freshly cracked black pepper on this healthy snack.
Onion garlic - Toss in one teaspoon each of onion powder and garlic powder along with turmeric and salt.
Peri peri: Sprinkle peri peri seasoning for a nice twist.
Italian: Use Italian seasonings and herbs instead of Indian spices to season the pasta.
Useful tips
Make sure all the fries are cut with the same thickness. This way, they will cook evenly.
Cornstarch helps give a nice crispy texture to these fries. Toss the cut potatoes with it or arrowroot powder to achieve crispy results.
Preheat the air fryer before placing the fries. Also, brush the air fryer basket with oil and place the fries.
Place the fries in a single layer without overcrowding the basket. Shake the air fryer basket midway. This will help in cooking the fries evenly.
I prefer to leave the skin on for crispier fries. You may peel the sweet potato if you prefer it that way.
Keep an eye after the 8-minute mark and take them out when they are just done. If you overcook the sweet potatoes, the fries will turn soggy.
Crispy, crunchy, healthy, and delicious air fryer sweet potato fries can be enjoyed with miso butter, ranch dip, or any dip of your choice and are loved by the kids.

FAQs
You can place the leftover fries in an airtight container and store them in the refrigerator for up to five days. To reheat them, put them in the air fryer at 350 F (180 C) for 2 minutes.
Sweet potato fries can be served with any dip of your choice. Ketchup and spicy sriracha go well with them.
This depends on the size of the fries and also the air fryer brand. You will need a minimum of 8-10 minutes for them to get done; however, keep an eye on the fries after about 6-7 minutes and adjust the cook time depending on its doneness.
Peeling them is purely optional. I prefer making these fries with the skin as the skin adds to the crispiness of the fries.
The fries will turn soggy if you overcrowd the air fryer basket. Always place a single layer of fries and fry them in batches. Also, it is important to preheat the air fryer to prevent the fries from turning soggy.
