About this recipe

Paneer bread roll is an easy snack made with paneer (Indian cottage cheese). These savory bread roll-ups are great for lunchboxes, and picnics, and can be served as finger food. They are one of the easiest dishes to make and are great for meal prep too. This kid-friendly snack can have many variations and you can adjust the taste according to your preference.

The most common version of Indian bread rolls is made with potatoes; however, I use paneer in this recipe and make these bread rolls without potatoes. I also shallow fry these bread rolls rather than deep-frying them. There are a plethora of combinations you can try - choose the type of bread, adjust the spices used, and add other vegetables like carrots! You can also slice them as serve a pinwheel sandwich.

Read of for ingredients, meal prep options, and step-by-step instructions to make these delicious Indian flavors-inspired savory roll-ups.

paneer bread roll

Ingredients

paneer bread roll ingredients

Paneer: Crumbled paneer or Indian cottage cheese is the main ingredient in the filling.

Bread: In this recipe, I have used plain white bread. Brown bread also works well for this dish.

Butter: I use butter to shallow fry the rolls.

Onion and capsicum: Make sure they are chopped finely before using.

Spices: I use garam masala and chili powder. Adjust the quantities as per your preference.

Green chutney: An easy spread made using mint leaves, coriander leaves (cilantro), ginger, garlic, green chili, lemon/lime juice, and salt.

Step-by-step instructions

1. To make the green chutney, blend together coriander leaves, mint leaves, garlic, green chili, lemon/lime juice, and salt using very little water. Set it aside.

Useful tips

The filling in this recipe makes 8-10 bread rolls. You can adjust the quantities as per your preference.

I make an easy green chutney that I use as a spread. You can skip it and use any spread of your choice. You can also use store-bought mint chutney.

Make sure you use very little water when grinding the green chutney. We want it to be slightly thick and spreadable.

Trim the ends of the bread before rolling them. Also, make sure they are rolled thinly and evenly.

Add other vegetables like grated carrot, and boiled corn kernels. Make sure they are cut into small bits or grated and there is no moisture content in them.

These bread roll-ups are great for meal prep too. The green chutney can be made and stored in the refrigerator for up to one week. You can make the filling the previous night and store it in the refrigerator. If you plan to store it for longer, skip onions in the filling. Without onions, the filling can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

FAQs

What bread can I use to make these rolls?

I use white or whole wheat bread and they both work very well. You can also use multiseed bread; however, it may not roll up well.

Can I meal prep them?

These bread roll-ups are great for meal prep too. The green chutney can be made and stored in the refrigerator for up to one week. You can make the filling the previous night and store it in the refrigerator. If you plan to store it for longer, skip onions in the filling. Without onions, the filling can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Are these savory bread roll-ups vegan?

No. I use paneer in the filling and butter to fry them so they are not vegan. To make them vegan, replace paneer with crumbled firm tofu and butter with vegan butter or any cooking oil.
