What is air fryer Brussels sprouts?

Air frying has become a popular and efficient way to cook various foods, and Brussels sprouts are no exception. With their crispy exterior and tender interior, air-fried Brussels sprouts are a great way to enjoy this nutritious vegetable.

Using an air fryer to roast vegetables is my new favorite way to cook them. Whether air fryer sweet potatoes or air fryer green beans, they turn out perfect with a crisp exterior and soft and tender interior. They are also quicker to make when compared to using an oven.

Whether you want a quick side dish for a weeknight meal or a tasty snack, these green sprouts will make you want more. I am also including oven instructions along with various seasoning options. So, make your Brussels super delicious with your air fryer!

Why you will love this recipe?

    • Simple and easy to follow: This recipe only has four simple steps, making it great for beginners or anyone who wants a quick and easy meal.
    • Ingredients are readily available: The simple ingredients used are available at most grocery stores.
    • Brussels sprouts are perfectly cooked: The air fryer cooks them evenly, resulting in a crispy exterior and tender interior.
    • Perfect side dish: Whether you're preparing a weeknight dinner or hosting a special gathering, roasted Brussels sprouts make an excellent side dish

    Ingredients

Ingredients to make Brussels sprouts placed on a marbel background.

Brussels Sprouts: Choose firm Brussels sprouts with a bright green color.

Seasoning: I am using garlic powder and onion powder.

See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

    Variations

Bacon: Add chopped 2-3 slices of bacon to the air fryer basket with the Brussels sprouts. Cook for 12-15 minutes or until the bacon is crisp.

Parmesan Cheese: Sprinkle ½ cup of grated parmesan cheese before cooking. Cook for 12-15 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Balsamic vinegar: Toss them with two tablespoons of balsamic vinegar before cooking. Cook for 12-15 minutes until the Brussels sprouts are tender and the balsamic vinegar has reduced slightly.

Maple sriracha glaze: Whisk together ¼ cup of maple syrup, two tablespoons of sriracha sauce, and one tablespoon of soy sauce. Toss them with the glaze before cooking. Cook for 12-15 minutes or until the Brussels sprouts are tender and the glaze is thickened.

    Step-by-step instructions

A 4-picture collage of steps showing mixing and rubbing the spices on the sprouts.

Step 1: Trim the crown of the fresh Brussels sprouts and cut them in half. If they are large, cut them into quarters. Place them in a large bowl (image 1).

Step 2: In a small mixing bowl, combine olive oil, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Mix everything well (image 2).

Step 3: Drizzle the seasoning over the prepared tender Brussels sprouts. Toss everything well, making sure all the sprouts are well coated (images 3 and 4).

Step 4: Place them in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Air fry for 12-15 minutes at 375 F (190 C) until golden and crispy edges appear. Shake the air fryer basket after the first 5 minutes (images 5 and 6). Adjust the cook time depending on the air fryer and the size of the sprouts.

    Oven Instructions

Here is how to make crispy Brussels sprouts in the oven:

    • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
    • Wash and trim Brussels sprouts and halve them.
    • Toss with olive oil (or avocado oil) and seasoning.
    • Spread on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
    • Bake 20-25 minutes, tossing halfway through.
    • They should turn golden brown and crispy. Check tenderness with a fork.
    • Drizzle lemon juice or lime juice on the cooked Brussels before serving.

    Expert Tips

Rinse the Brussels sprouts under cold water to remove any dirt or debris. Pat the Brussels sprouts dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture.

Trim them by removing the tough outer leaves and the stem. Halve or quarter the Brussels sprouts, depending on their size.

When tossing the olive oil and seasonings, make sure they are well-coated. This helps in achieving consistent flavor and texture.

Cook the Brussels sprouts in a single layer in the air fryer basket to ensure hot air circulation. Shake the air fryer basket halfway through cooking to ensure it cooks evenly. Overcrowding can lead to uneven cooking and steaming instead of roasting.

    Serving Air Fryer Brussels Sprouts

Roasted Brussels sprouts make a fantastic side dish complementing any main course.

Grilled chicken or pork: The savory and crispy sprouts pair well with grilled chicken or pork's flavorful profile. Try them with these Indian-style grilled chicken drumsticks.

Millet or rice bowls: Create a balanced and nutritious bowl by adding them to a base of sorghum or red rice. Top with protein of your choice and a drizzle of sauce for a complete meal.

Burgers: Pair roasted Brussels sprouts with burgers, either chicken, turkey, or potato burger. The crispy texture of the sprouts adds a satisfying element to the meal.

    Recipe FAQs

How do I store these air-fried Brussels sprouts?

To store leftover Brussels sprouts, allow them to cool to room temperature before placing them in an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. When reheating, use the oven or an air fryer for a few minutes to restore crispiness. Avoid reheating in the microwave, as it can make them soggy.

Can I use frozen Brussels sprouts for this recipe?

Yes, you can use frozen Brussels sprouts for air fryer cooking. Thaw the frozen sprouts first by placing them in the refrigerator or using the defrost function on your microwave. Make sure to pat them dry to remove excess moisture before air frying. Remember that frozen Brussels sprouts might take longer to cook than fresh ones, so adjust the cooking time as needed. While they might not be as crispy as fresh sprouts, proper thawing and drying can help achieve the right texture.

Should Brussels sprouts be blanched before air frying?

Blanching them before air frying is optional but not necessary. While blanching can help soften them slightly and reduce cooking time, it's not essential for achieving delicious air fryer Brussels sprouts. You can achieve excellent results by cooking fresh or thawed Brussels sprouts directly in the air fryer without blanching, as the air frying process will naturally create a crispy exterior and tender interior.

    Are Brussels sprouts healthy?

Brussels sprouts are a member of the gemmifera group of cabbages. They have numerous health benefits and are high in nutrients. They are low in calories, high in fiber, and packed with essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, vitamin K, and folate.
