Chai tea hot toddy is a warm, spiced drink made with chai tea, alcohol, honey, and spice. This warm and comforting drink is perfect for enjoying on a cold winter night.

Chai hot toddy glass topped with star anise and placed on a wooden board.

A hot toddy is a classic cocktail traditionally made with a combination of whiskey, hot water, honey or sugar, and lemon. A tea hot toddy is a variation of the traditional hot toddy that incorporates chai tea and warming spices into the recipe. It combines the comforting and aromatic qualities of black tea and chai spices with the warmth of a traditional hot toddy.

I love chai-based cocktails and experimenting with unique flavor combinations to create delightful drinks that elevate the traditional chai experience. My other two favorite cocktails are chai white Russian and chai martini.

Why you will love this recipe?

    • The combination of chai and warm spices creates a flavorful and aromatic warm drink. The chai spices add complexity and a comforting quality to the drink.
    • This hot toddy tea recipe is straightforward and very easy to make. With hot brewed chai tea and a few additional ingredients, you can quickly create a chai tea hot toddy in no time.

    Variations

Whiskey variation: Use bourbon, rye, or Irish whiskey in this basic recipe to create variations of chai hot toddies. You can also use dark rum or spiced rum to make this classic hot cocktail.

Pumpkin Spice: Instead of using chai concentrate, use a black tea bag and pumpkin spice. Sweeten the chai hot toddy cocktail with maple syrup. This variation adds a seasonal touch and extra flavor to the classic recipe.

Apple cider toddy: Use warm apple cider instead of chai concentrate for a cozy and flavorful alternative.

Food pairing with chai hot toddy

Baked goodies: This warm cocktail pairs well with a range of baked goods, such as cookies or biscuits, like cherry chocolate cookies, chai-spiced cookies, or cardamon cookies. Flaky pastries, like Nutella croissants, cinnamon rolls, or palmiers, are also great pairings.

Nuts and dried fruits: The nutty and fruity flavors can complement the chai spices in this chai hot toddy. A selection of mixed nuts, such as almonds, cashews, or pecans, and dried fruits like figs, dates, or apricots are great options.

    Equipment

    • Jigger
    • Saucepan

    Ingredients

    • ½ cup chai concentrate (warm or room temperature)
    • 1 oz whiskey
    • ½ teaspoon honey
    • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
    • ½ cup hot water
Prevent your screen from going dark

    Instructions

    • In a mug or glass, combine chai concentrate, whiskey, honey, and fresh lemon juice. Stir them well.
    • Slowly pour hot water to fill the glass. Give it a quick stir.
    • Garnish with star anise, cinnamon stick, or lemon slice. Serve immediately.

    Notes

The chai concentrate already has sweetener in it so I use less amount of honey. You can adjust according to your taste and preference.
Make sure the chai concentrate is warm or at room temperature. If you have stored the concentrate in the refrigerator, heat it gently before making the cocktail.

I love new chai drinks, and this one was so good! It was soothing and delicious, and It is a great winter drink. It is also interesting how it was once made as a soup, now that I have made it as a drink, I can't imagine that!

This was such a great recipe. I used dark rum, because that’s what I prefer over whiskey but it’s still turned out really well. I’ll definitely be making it again.

My mom was sick on the weekend and I made this hot toddy for her. She claimed it was the best tasting warm alcoholic drink she's ever had! It helped alleviate her symptoms and made her happy, which was the best part.
