    Dry fruits modak.

Modak is a beloved traditional sweet similar to dumplings, enjoyed during the Hindu festival of Ganesh Chaturthi. It is said to be Bappa's favorite dish and is typically made with rice or wheat flour and a coconut and jaggery filling.

Previously, I shared a recipe for the traditional steamed modak, also known as ukadiche modak, including tips for perfect preparation. The dry fruits modak that I am sharing here is a simple adaptation of the traditional recipe.

Why you will love this recipe?

    • Simple ingredients: This recipe requires only a few ingredients, including cashews, almonds, and dates. All of these ingredients are natural, healthy, and easily available.
    • No cooking required: As the name suggests, this recipe requires no cooking, making it a quick and easy option for anyone to prepare.
    • No added sugar: The sweetness of the dish comes from the dates used in the recipe, which means that no additional sugar or sweeteners are required, making it a healthier option.

    Ingredients

Nuts: I use cashews and almonds to make the dry fruits modak. However, you may use other nuts like walnuts, macadamia, pecan, or pistachio.

Dates: I have used plain pitted dates to make this dish. Medjool dates can also be used.

Ghee: Most Indian sweets are made with ghee. However, if you prefer a vegan version, you may replace ghee with coconut oil.

Ground cardamom: This is an optional ingredient; however, I highly recommend using it as it adds a beautiful aroma to the dish.

    Step-by-step instructions

Grind the nuts and dates to make the mixture.

Step 1: Take cashews and almonds in a food processor. Process them and chop them into a slightly coarse powder. Set them aside. Next, add the pitted dates to the food processor and blitz them until they come together like soft dough.

Step 2: In a large bowl, combine the dates and nuts until they come together. Add 1 teaspoon of ghee and mix it well to form a dough.

Shape them in using a mold.

Step 3: Grease the modak mold with some ghee. Fill the date mixture into it and press well. Gently unmould the modak.

    Ready to be served.

Make sure the dates are blitzed well else they will not bind together.
Cardamom powder is optional, but it gives a wonderful aroma and taste to the laddoos.
